  • More Than A Memory

So, I am feeling a bit down today. I thought things were going really well with Eric, and I was convinced God was calling us to be married. We have so much in common and I've been open and honest with him. I honestly can say I really would like to be his wife someday. However, he said that he doesn't know to solve the problem of me being in NM and he in TN. I don't know, but I really feel that I don't want to give this relationship up. I don't want kids, so it's going to be difficult for me to find a man willing to be in a serious relationship, especially marriage and I'm only looking for a Christian man. I really have a strong pull towards Eric, and don't want to give this up, I just don't know what to do, I'm at a loss.

    Pillars of Faith

Love, it's a word that has many definitions, connotations, both positive and negative, and a myriad of emotions. First of all, love is a verb and a noun. What is love to Christians? The Christian virtue of love is stated thus: Bearing wit one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint; even as Christ forgave you, so you almost must do. But above all these things put on love which is the bond of perfection.” Colos 3:12-13. So, love to a Christian is both a noun and a verb. We have concern for others, and we cherish others. Love and tolerance have often been confused. Tolerance these days means “I'll accept whatever you do without question.” Tolerance should instead mean respecting that all humans are the creation of God, and because of this, they deserve the virtues that include kindness, justice, and love. Christians should remember that we can be tolerant of a person being human as far as they will allow. Part of being Christian is pointing out sin, but that doesn't mean using “fire and brimstone” tactics. We all sin, and none of us can claim to be perfect. All people, believers and non-believers alike can fall down and sin. The difference is Christians are covered by grace.

A big question often hurled at Christians is “Do you believe I'm going to hell become of [insert addiction, belief, or lifestyle here]. The answer to this can help someone try to see Christianity in a new light or succumb to the prevailing stereotype that Christians point fingers and say, “Yes, you are going straight to hell you vile sinner!” Sins are all the same in God's eyes: lying, adultery, pride, etc. All of us have sinner in one way or the other, in a lie, or wayward thought. The point is, God loves all people regardless of what they're struggling with. As servants of God we're to strengthen those who are in pain and lift them up: “I am feeble and severely broken, I groan because of the turmoil in my heart...For I am ready to fall, and my sorrow is continually before me...For you, O Lord, I hope” Psalm 38: 6-15. Because all humans are born with a rebellious nature, the flesh, some struggles will be more difficult in some than in others. Some of these struggles are made more difficult by the environment, some because of social mores and forays, and some due to genetic factors. In my case, fighting against the flesh will always be a struggle while on Earth, but these desires can be managed. First, when you fail, don't despair or discourage your soul. Even if you're not a Christian and you hit some obstacles and stumbling blocks, remember you are loved. It can be hard to know the infinite and immense love and forgiveness of God. Second, find someone who's been through what you're struggling with (an accountability partner) to help you figure out what you need to do to avoid your pitfalls.

Figure out your triggers and try to get rid of them or minimize them. It's never easy battling with the nature of the flesh. It is a powerful drive and desire, obedience if far more difficult than independence. Humanity has suffered from this dichotomy, obedience versus the self, since the fall of Eden where we have become aware of sin. Alone, we feel we're trying to breathe in a sea of sand, but with God and others it can be overcome. God can give ethereal amounts of strength and love if you ask. For the unbeliever, talking to a Christian about your troubles and struggles is a good step. Jesus Christ gave Himself so we could be forgiven and find peace, serenity, and joy. God loves everyone, and regardless of what some groups say, He does not hate anyone. We are His creation, and He loves us and wants us with Him. He cannot tolerate sin because He's perfect, but He wants all to feel and have salvation. Jesus as a mortal, so He knows the extent of temptation.

So, how does a Christian really show love? The simple answer would be to do as Jesus does. Jesus was very sympathetic to those who knew they were sinners and felt hopeless. “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution... Yet in all these things w are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. Nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is Christ our Lord” Romans 8: 35-39. Jesus was known to hang out with people considered sub-human because of disease or the sins they struggled with. After all, David committed adultery and murder, but was a “man after God's own heart.” David knew he had done wrong, so he repented and told God he needed Him to be in charge of his life. Repentance means acknowledging what you've done is wrong and avoiding that sin. Repentance means acknowledging you're weak in and seeking God's help and guidance. Temptation is not sinful, however, giving into it is. The best way to kill a temptation is to starve it. Put on your armor of God and slay that snarling dragon! You can be covered in the Blood of the Lamb, let it engross you both mentally and physically. Use the Word as your sword. Jesus has already been the victor in the ultimate fight; the fight to be assured your soul can live after death. Jesus has conquered death and He wants you to live. We must all face a physical death, but it's not necessary to suffer a spiritual death as well.

  • This leads me to say and believe many reject Christ because it means giving up control and following your desires. God did lay down laws and rules for following Him. This is not because he’s a hard-nosed tyrant, but because He cares for our well-being and wants to protect us. It proves you have faith and commitment to honor Him, just as you would a spouse. Like a parent that sets boundaries, so does God govern rules for Christian life. God gave humans the ability to control and rise above their fleshly desires, to think, and to reason. While all human possess drives, such as sexual, God gave us the ability to rise above these until marriage, the only proper place to explore the desires He placed in us.

If we examine the consequences of unbridled, free-for-all sex and passion we can see the train wreck we’ve landed ourselves in: STDs, AIDs, pregnancies, broken marriages. This shows disobeying the law has consequences, sometimes, deadly ones. Giving up control can be difficult, especially because society has taught humans they must solve things themselves, and let their passions go askew! Society screams to not ignore your desires, to indulge when the urge strikes you. However, knowing God is in charge can be beneficial for your health, both spiritual and physical. If you could give your stresses, work, social, finances, marriage, children, to someone who said, “Okay, I’ll take care of it,” would you? Wouldn’t you leap at the chance to do that? God can do that because He wants to know you and help you. God can be there for you and give you strength, peace, and wisdom. You have to accept His gift and that you will have to change yourself and your life. This change will take time and effort, but it is well worth it. There will be ups and downs, but you can achieve it with steadfastness and persistence.

    Finding the Path

So, for a long time the bridge between God and man was broken because of sin. God loves us so much, He sent someone to make things right. God sent His Son to be born as a man, Jesus Christ; He was sent to spread the word of how to know God. Jesus’s death left us free to accept the gift of salvation. Jesus was free of sin, and so God could accept Him as a sacrifice for mankind’s wrongdoing, and repair what was broken. Jesus understands the struggles humans face, the temptation of sin, and the hardship of life on Earth. He was a flesh and blood man! He was betrayed by a friend and follower, and had to see his friend die, only to be resurrected by him. We can all accept this gift, no matter how much you’ve done, or how long you’ve turned away, you can accept it and God will love you as you are. God doesn’t want anyone to be separated from Him. We are free to accept or reject Him. If you reject Him, however, you will be separated from Him from eternity.
  • This is part of the essay I wrote on Christ and Christianity. I hope to shed some light on it:

    Onward Christian Soldiers

Christianity, the mere mention of this word can put some on the defensive, inspire others, and still make others furious. You may be able to talk about God freely, but mention Jesus and reactions are often hostile and bitter, sometimes bordering on vitriol. Why is this? Is there some deep knowledge in all of us in the truth of Jesus’s life and teachings? Is there a truth imprinted on the hearts of all humanity that humans try to defy and push aside but are really the fingerprints of our maker? If you bring Jesus Christ into the picture the feathers become ruffled and in some cases, plucked. Now, I’m not here to tell you that Christianity is an easy road. In fact, committing yourself to Christ is a very large obligation and something you have to work at. I will try to answer some basic questions, but I hold no degree in theology or apologetics. This is simply my journey, which is still being completed, and will never be totally finished until death. As with any relationship, you will have ups and downs, joyous celebrations and feelings of despair. I have some recommended reading for discovering how to answer tough theological questions, such as how science and Christianity can mesh and even support one another. This will be addressed at the end of this essay.

First, why chose Christianity? In today’s world, it’s popular to day “all paths lead to God,” “all religions teach the same thing,” or “everyone worships the same God.” While these sentiments may be comforting to some, not all religions are the same. They do not all worship the same God, and only one teaching can be right. Not all truths that claim to be true are true. The three monotheistic religions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam all believe in one true God and one only. Polytheistic religions claim multiple gods or an “inner god.” While the three monotheistic religions all believe in only one God, the way to achieve a relationship with Him is different. With Islam, it is being a devout Muslim by prayer and obeying Allah and the Qur’an. In Judaism, you must keep the holidays and rituals as well as prayer to be with God, Yahweh. In Christianity, you may have a personal relationship with God through the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. Only Christianity claims God sent His only Son to Earth to die a horrible, agonizing death because of God’s love for His children and to repair the relationship broken by sin.

After all, only one religion (atheism is technically a religion, it has a set of beliefs), is correct. There is a God or not, there is an afterlife or not. To prove or disprove a set of beliefs, you must look at the evidence. Can science prove some of the beliefs of what the religion claims? Are the documents the religion is based on historically sound and reliable? Can logic mesh with their claims? For example, in Genesis the Bible claims “God created the heavens and the Earth.” Science has demonstrated that the universe came into being after nothingness. Something caused it to suddenly “explode” into being. You can’t create something out of nothing! It can’t create itself! And if you look at the complexity of the atmosphere, too much more or too little of nitrogen or oxygen, we’d suffocate or things would explode! All this precision suggests a designer with infinite intelligence. In any case, I am not here to propound on Evolution versus Creation, Intelligent Design versus Darwinism.

    What is this?

A large, gaping black hole, this is what most humans have. Many believe they can fill this hole themselves and make their own happiness. Some people use drugs to run away from life and let the drugs give them an unnatural addictive high, others use relationships with others to fill the void, and yet, others use material things. After time, these things fade, and people try buying more, doing more, and wanting more, getting deeper into addictions and despair as the hole tends to creep back up on them after the thrill fades. What is this hunger, this hole so many people feel? Why do so many of us wonder what our purpose here? Why would we if we were, as evolutions claim, we suddenly sprung up from random chemicals in a toxic soup? It is a spiritual longing, a need for hope, unconditional love, and forgiveness. God is not a cosmic vending machine that you press the right button you get what you want or a leering disciplinarian ready and waiting to smack your hand with a ruler if you disobey. God is calling out to us from our souls because He loves us more than we can imagine, He created us, and He longs for us to be at his side. That emptiness so many attempting to fill but are doing so in vain is because He longs for people to reach out to Him so that broken bridge shattered by sin can be repaired and strengthened. Any Earthly thing; drugs, love, money, material items, will never fill the gap that only God can fill.

You may ask, why not Buddhism, Hinduism, or any of the New Age religions? They know the way! They can tell me how to live! The reason is, the burden of proof does not stack up for these religions, but when you examine the evidence, and Christianity proves itself time and time again. The proof for Christianity’s truthfulness shines through in the reliability of the New Testament historically, the scientific information, and the unwritten but known “moral responsibility” evident on every human being on this planet. C.S. Lewis in his book Mere Christianity examines the moral law in detail and how it points to a Creator. How do all men know murder is wrong even if they don’t want to admit it? Why is honesty valued over lying, valor over cowardice? The only explanation is someone, an intelligent being, wrote His wishes on the hearts of men. His beliefs on what is moral and right dictated onto the hearts of His creations. Genetics can pass on hair color, eye color, and even some diseases, but there’s no proof it can pass on right and wrong, that genetics can “legislate” morality. God desired to have a creature in His image; a creature that could think, feel, and speak intimately with Him. This brings us to one of the biggest obstacles faced by believers and non-believers alike, why does God let horrible, awful things happen if He is a loving, all-powerful God?

    Why Does Evil Exist?

One of the most frequently asked questions and objections is that an all-powerful loving God lets such horrific, horrible evil exist in the world and evil people live while others die. First off, God did not envision the world to be filled with such evil. God did not plan a world where such corrupt actions, murder, stealing, adultery, etc exist. When God created Adam and Eve, they lived in a perfect world, a paradise, where there was harmony and no strife. God was extremely close to His creation, even walking and talking with them. However, after Adam and Eve disobeyed His command, He had no choice but to back away, because they had chosen their desires over Him. He had to back away from the closeness He’d originally shared and be distant because He is perfect and sin now separated them. We were given freewill, so we could CHOOSE to love Him freely, not robotically. Freewill allows man to obey God or the call of his own desires and flesh. Freewill allows man to do things his way, or let to God in the door. The flesh leads to sin because we desire to do things our way. We can do what we want! We can handle it! The truth is, none of us are innocent, and we all suffer from sin. Christians are just forgiven from it by grace.
